The When/Then Trap: Why the Feelings You Want Don’t Live at the Finish Line

Have you ever reached a goal you worked incredibly hard for, only to feel… underwhelmed? Maybe even a little empty?

I was talking with a client one time who had just completed his first Ironman triathlon. This is a man who trained for months, pushed his body to its limits, and crossed one of the most demanding finish lines in endurance sports. When I asked how it felt, he got quiet.

“Steph, I was really hoping I’d feel less empty. More proud of myself. More self-compassion.” He paused. “But I just got to the finish line and felt nothing.”

That moment stuck with me, because I recognized it immediately. I’ve been there. I think most of us have.

What the When/Then Trap looks like

I call this the When/Then Trap. It’s a pattern where we attach the feelings we want to a future outcome. “When I lose the weight, then I’ll feel confident.” “When I make this amount of money, then I’ll feel secure.” “When things slow down at work, then I’ll reconnect with my partner.”

It’s a trap for two reasons. First, it’s often a form of delay. We’re putting off things we know would be good for us by telling ourselves the timing isn’t right yet. But the deeper problem is that we believe the destination is where the feelings live. And most of the time, it just isn’t.

Think about someone who has spent years speaking negatively to themselves, listening to every inner critic, feeling shame about where they are. If that person loses 15 pounds, do those thought patterns suddenly change? I watch this happen with clients constantly. The weight comes off, and the feelings of worthiness and pride they were expecting simply aren’t there. Because the inner dialogue didn’t change just because the circumstance did.

We’ve made our feelings contingent on outcomes. And in doing that, we’ve neglected to practice those feelings along the way.

Feelings are a muscle

Here’s what I’ve come to understand, both in my own life and from years of coaching: feelings are like a muscle. You have to flex them to build them.

You’ve heard the idea that money accentuates who you really are. If you’re fearful and critical before you have money, you’ll be the same way with it, just amplified. The destination doesn’t change what’s inside. We have to do that work ourselves.

The people I work with who feel the deepest satisfaction when they achieve something are the ones who have been building those feelings all along. They celebrate wins as they come. They practice gratitude, presence, and self-compassion in real time, instead of waiting for an achievement to grant them permission.

How to start practicing now

The process is simpler than you might think. Look at the goals you’re working toward and ask yourself: what will achieving this give me? Answer through the lens of feeling. Security? Pride? Freedom? Joy? Connection?

Once you know what feelings you’re really chasing, you can start practicing them today.

If it’s security, look for the evidence that you are safe and held in your life right now. If it’s connection, practice real presence with the people already around you. If it’s pride, start celebrating the wins you’ve been blowing past.

You are never cut off from the feelings you desire. You always have access to them, even on a small scale. We’re just not used to thinking about it that way.

So this week, take a look at where the When/Then Trap might be showing up in your life. Are you waiting for a finish line to deliver something you could start building right now?

The most powerful shift I’ve seen in my clients happens when they stop postponing their feelings and start practicing them. That’s where the real transformation lives.
