The Gap to Close: Why Your Life Can Look Great and Still Feel Wrong

Have you ever looked at your own life from the outside and thought, this should feel better than it does?

I had a client not long ago who fit that description exactly. Successful. Charismatic. Married, with a thriving business and a beautiful home. On paper, it was the kind of life people admire. But when he sat across from me, what came out was anger. Resentment. He told me he could barely remember the last time he felt real joy, and he was desperate for something to shift.

I understood how he felt, because I’ve lived a version of that gap myself.

What the Gap to Close Actually Is

I call it the gap to close: the space between two versions of your life. There’s the version rooted in your current reality, your current stress, your current sense of who you’re allowed to be. And there’s the version you dream about, the one that feels more like you, more alive, more free.

Sometimes that gap is the distance between where your life is now and where you wish it were. Just as often, it’s less visible than that. It’s the distance between who you are on the inside and who you let the world see.

That second version of the gap is the one people struggle with the most.

So what actually lives in that space? In my coaching practice, it’s rarely just one thing. It’s the beliefs we carry about who we’re allowed to be. It’s the old programming from how we were raised, what was modeled as normal, what our families expected. It’s the saboteur voice whispering that we’re too much or not enough. It’s shame, it’s fear, and sometimes it’s simple confusion, not knowing what we actually want because we’ve spent years performing what we thought we should want instead.

What Closing the Gap Actually Looks Like

With my client, closing the gap wasn’t about telling him to be more grateful. It would have been the easy thing to say, given how good his life looked from the outside. But gratitude wasn’t the missing piece. The real work was going into the anger, naming the beliefs influencing his decisions without his realizing it, and being honest about how burned out he actually was. Only once he did that did his outer life start to catch up with something true underneath it.

I think often about my own version of this. In my late twenties, I was keeping a significant secret from almost everyone I loved. I hadn’t come out yet to my friends and family, and the person I was inside even my closest relationships looked nothing like the person I actually was. That gap didn’t stay compartmentalized. It impacted everything, my confidence, my work, my ability to build the life I actually wanted.

Here’s what I learned back then: you can’t reach the dream version of your life while a true version of yourself stays hidden. I tried. It doesn’t work that way. The outside can’t fully change while the inside is still being kept a secret.

Where to Start

You don’t have to close the whole gap in one week. You just have to start being honest about where it is.

Ask yourself what kind of distance exists between who you are on the inside and who you present to the world. Ask what kind of gap exists between your current reality and the reality you actually dream of living. Notice whether you’re doing the things that feel purposeful, or the things that simply look good from the outside.

The goal isn’t a perfect life on paper. It’s a life where the inside and the outside finally match.
